In Grublin you choose your heat source: gas, electric, Aga or none. When Aga is set, every recipe request tells Grub the cook cooks on an Aga oven and an Aga hob, so the method is written for a range cooker's always-on ovens and hotplates rather than for a conventional oven with a temperature dial. Grublin is a free recipe app for iPhone and Android.
Every recipe assumes a dial you don't have
"Preheat the oven to 200°C." Aga owners have been translating that sentence for decades: roasting oven or baking oven, how long, grid shelf where. Every recipe you find online is written for a kitchen you don't have, and the translation is yours to do, every time.
Grublin skips the translation. Set Aga once and Grub knows there is nothing to preheat, that there are ovens of different heats rather than one oven of any heat, and that the hotplates are where the fast work happens.
How Grublin handles an Aga
What is set. The request states that the cook cooks on an Aga oven and an Aga hob. That one fact changes how the method is written: ovens by heat rather than by number, slow things left low, fast things on the boiling plate.
What is not scripted. Grublin does not hold a table of Aga oven names, shelf positions and conversions. The method comes from the model's knowledge of range cooking, which is good, and from your corrections, which are better. If a step reads wrong for your particular model (two-oven, four-oven, electric conversion), tap Tweak and say so.
Extras still apply. Add a slow cooker, air fryer or microwave and Grub uses them where they help, alongside the Aga rather than instead of it. An Aga household in summer, with the range off, can set the heat source to none and cook from the extras.
Aga plus your dietary rules
The Aga community has excellent recipes and almost none of them are filtered for allergies or diets. Set your allergens and diet once in Grublin and every Aga recipe is written to them.
- Gluten-free slow braises and roasts with cornflour gravies.
- Vegetarian and vegan dishes that use the simmering oven for pulses and grains overnight.
- Dairy-free bakes and gratins with oat or coconut cream.
What you'll actually cook
Grub writes from what you have, so there is no fixed list, but an Aga plus a normal fridge tends to produce the dishes range cookers are good at: slow braises and casseroles that go in and are forgotten, roasted joints and trays of vegetables, bread and bakes, soups and stocks that simmer all afternoon, risottos and pilafs finished in the oven, porridge overnight, and quick hotplate dishes when there isn't time for any of that. Say "I fancy something slow for Sunday" and the recipe comes back written for the low oven.
Yes. Set Aga as your heat source and every recipe request tells Grub the cook cooks on an Aga oven and hob, so the method is written for a range cooker rather than a conventional oven with a dial. The method comes from the model's knowledge of range cooking, not from a table Grublin maintains. It writes for ovens by heat rather than by temperature number. If a step doesn't suit your model, tap Tweak and tell it. Grublin does not distinguish them. Tell Grub in a tweak if a recipe assumes an oven you don't have. Yes. Set the heat source to none and add whatever extras you cook with instead, such as an induction plate or an air fryer. See no oven. Yes. Kit and dietary rules are both set once in Preferences and every recipe is written to all of them together.Questions people ask
