Grub with a lightbulb above his head

Egg-free recipes from whatever's in your fridge

Set egg once in Preferences. Every recipe Grub writes avoids eggs and the sauces and dishes built on them, and is re-checked before you see it. Egg replacers and egg-free versions pass.

"Mayo's an egg. Hollandaise is an egg in a nice coat. I know where they hide."

Grublin treats egg as a hard rule. When you set it, every recipe request states it as a critical safety constraint, and the finished recipe is re-checked by Grublin's own code against a list of egg ingredients and the dishes and sauces that contain egg without saying so. Egg replacers and ingredients marked egg-free are recognised and allowed. Grublin is a free recipe app for iPhone and Android.

Egg is the ingredient recipes don't mention

Egg allergy, especially in children, means reading past the ingredient list to the technique. The binding in the meatballs. The glaze on the pastry. The emulsion that makes the sauce a sauce. Half the dishes that contain egg never list "egg" as a line item, so you learn to recognise the words that imply it.

Grublin has learned them too. Set egg once and both the word and the dishes behind it are kept out.

What the check catches

Grub with an idea
The bake still binds. He used something else.

Egg, by name. Egg and eggs, in any form.

The emulsions. Mayonnaise and mayo, aioli, hollandaise, béarnaise, under either spelling.

The dishes that are egg. Meringue, omelette, frittata, quiche.

Allowed through. Egg replacer, egg substitute, and anything described as egg-free, so a recipe that uses them is not falsely rejected.

If a forbidden term appears in the finished recipe, Grub asks for another and you only see the one that passed.

What the check does not catch

  • Egg in products. Fresh pasta, brioche, some breads, battered goods and many sauces in a jar contain egg without the recipe needing to say so. The check reads ingredient names, not product labels.
  • Technique words. "Egg wash" contains the word egg and is caught. "Glaze" on its own is not. Read the method as well as the list.
  • Cross-contamination. Shared pans and fryers.

The check reduces the chance of egg reaching your plate. Read the label on anything in a packet.

Egg-free and something else

  • Egg-free and dairy-free. The common pair for a small child. Set both and bakes are built on oil and plant milk.
  • Egg-free and vegan. Vegan already excludes egg; set vegan and you are covered, with the same lookalikes allowed.
  • Egg-free and gluten-free. Set both. Most of the egg-free baking tricks lean on wheat; Grub reaches for the ones that don't.
  • Egg-free with a nut allergy. Set tree nuts and peanut too and the household rules are all enforced at once.

What you'll actually cook

Grub writes from your fridge or your craving, so there is no fixed list, but egg-free pushes towards dishes where egg was never the point: curries, stews, stir-fries, pasta with oil-based sauces, roasts and traybakes, soups, grain bowls, bean dishes, oil-and-vinegar dressings, and bakes bound with banana, flax or shop-bought replacer. Ask for "something like a carbonara" and the version that comes back is built on a silky plant-based or dairy sauce without the yolks.

Set your kit too, so an egg-free dinner from an air fryer is written for the air fryer.

Questions people ask

Does Grublin check for egg in mayonnaise and hollandaise?

Yes. Mayonnaise, mayo, aioli, hollandaise and béarnaise are on the egg list, as are meringue, omelette, frittata and quiche.

Are egg replacers allowed?

Yes. Egg replacer, egg substitute and ingredients marked egg-free are recognised and allowed through.

Can I combine egg-free with other allergies and diets?

Yes. Set everything that applies in Preferences and every recipe is written to all of it and re-checked against each hard rule.

Is Grublin safe for a child with an egg allergy?

Grublin states egg as a critical constraint in every request and re-checks each recipe, but it is AI-generated, works on ingredient names rather than brands, and cannot see product labels. Always read every label yourself. For a serious allergy, do not rely on Grublin alone.

Does it work from a photo?

Yes. Photograph your shelf or a dish you fancy and the recipe Grub writes follows the egg rule like any other. See photo to recipe.
