Grub holding a fork and looking hungry

Low-carb recipes from whatever's in your fridge

Set low-carb once in Preferences. Every recipe Grub writes is steered away from the starchy bulk and towards protein and vegetables, built from your shelf or your craving, inside your allergies and kit. No counting, no tracking.

"Chips were going to be the side. They are now a courgette. You're welcome."

Low-carb in Grublin is a dietary style that steers every recipe. When you set it, each recipe request states that the recipe must satisfy a low-carb diet, and Grub writes with less bread, pasta, rice, potato and sugar and more protein and vegetables, from the ingredients you have or the dish you fancy. Low-carb is not re-checked by Grublin's own code and no macros are counted; it is steering, not enforcement. Grublin is a free recipe app for iPhone and Android.

Lower carb without going the whole way

Not everyone eating low-carb is eating keto. Most people mean something simpler: fewer potatoes, less pasta, smaller portions of rice, no sugar in the sauce, and a plate that is mostly protein and vegetables. That is a preference recipe sites don't filter for well, because every dinner either is or isn't in their "low-carb" category, with nothing in between.

Grublin treats it as a direction rather than a category. Set low-carb and Grub writes towards it with whatever's in the fridge: the stir-fry comes with more vegetables and less noodle, the chilli comes without rice, the roast comes with greens where the potatoes would have been.

What "steered" means here, plainly

Grub with a fork
Fewer potatoes. He has opinions about this but keeps them to himself.

Allergens and the ethical and religious diets are re-checked in the finished recipe by Grublin's own code, because a miss there is a danger or a broken promise.

Low-carb is steered. The request tells Grub the recipe must be low-carb, and the model follows it well. But no code counts carbohydrate afterwards and Grublin calculates no macros or calories. If a recipe comes back with more starch than you want, tap Tweak and say "less rice" or "no bread"; the next version listens. If you need numbers, use a tracker alongside. Grublin decides dinner; it doesn't log it.

If you want the strict version, keto is the setting for that.

What to expect in the recipes

Grub writes from your fridge or your craving, so there is no fixed list, but low-carb plus your kit tends to produce: meat and fish with roasted or buttered vegetables, big salads with protein, stir-fries heavy on vegetables, frittatas and shakshuka, soups, lettuce wraps, cauliflower or celeriac mash, courgette or aubergine where pasta would have been, and curries with a small portion of rice rather than none. Say "I fancy a Sunday roast" and it comes with greens and roasted roots instead of a mountain of potatoes.

Low-carb and something else

  • Low-carb and gluten-free. Natural allies. Set both and bread and pasta are out twice over; the gluten rule is enforced.
  • Low-carb and vegetarian. Set both. Eggs, halloumi, paneer, tofu, pulses in moderation and vegetables do the work.
  • Low-carb and halal. Grilled meats and vegetable dishes suit both; the halal rule is enforced.
  • Low-carb and dairy-free. Set both and the creaminess comes from coconut, avocado and olive oil.

In your kitchen

Tell Grub your kit and the low-carb dinner is written for it: an air fryer for crispy vegetables and protein, a slow cooker for stews without the dumplings, no oven for pan dinners. Set who's eating and the portions follow.

Questions people ask

Does Grublin write low-carb recipes?

Yes. Set low-carb in Preferences and every recipe request states that the recipe must be low-carb. Grub steers away from bread, pasta, rice, potatoes and sugar and towards protein and vegetables.

Does it count carbs?

No. Grublin counts nothing: no calories, no macros. Low-carb is steering, not tracking.

What's the difference between low-carb and keto in Grublin?

Low-carb steers towards less starch and sugar while still allowing moderate portions. Keto steers towards very low carbohydrate and high fat. Both are steered rather than re-checked.

Is low-carb re-checked like allergens?

No. Allergens and the vegetarian, vegan, halal and kosher diets are re-checked by Grublin's own code. Low-carb is stated in the request and followed by the model. If something slips in, tap Tweak and say so.

Does it work from a photo?

Yes. Photograph a dish you fancy and Grub writes a lower-carb version of it. See photo to recipe.
